The hostel of the Adult Psychiatry Clinic in Kraków is located in the former apartment of Professor Antoni Kępiński. It is organised on the basis of the idea that schizophrenic patients should integrate with so-called "healthy society", as formulated and put into practice by Professor Kępiński.
The hostel, as a form of rehabilitation, was a nationwide experiment undertaken twenty-four years ago. Nowadays it is a rich source of experience and tradition of living together for the team working in the outpatient care of the Adult Psychiatry Clinic (Miodowa 9 and plac Sikorskiego 2/8) and the Families' Association "Mental Health".
The fundamental assumption in establishing and managing hostels is to maintain the apartments in the local community (so as to avoid the isolation of mental patients), to act according to the principles of living together, mutual responsibility, collaboration, tolerance and democracy.
The residents of the hostel suffer from psychic disorders, they are very easily hurt, prone to stress, and find it hard to fulfil their social roles. The hostel does not provide permanent accommodation because a limited time of therapy is presupposed. Yet, it gives patients an opportunity to transfer the experiences from their therapy to their natural environment.

In contrast to sheltered apartments, the hostel is an intermediate form of psychiatric care. The hostel group influences the formation of emotional bonds, it allows the patient to practice the social skills of everyday life (cleaning, managing common funds, having usual responsibilities, preparing food, showing responsibility for oneself and the group). Having left the hostel, former residents continue to pursue their previous objectives, using the acquired skills in their future life.
